The City Council approved participation in the state-wide sales tax holiday for August 5, 6, 7, 2011. During that weekend Alabama will hold its fifth annual sales tax holiday. It gives shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of city and state sales or use taxes.

The “City Safe Room” project moved forward Monday night. The Council approved a $63,150.00 contract with “Marcum Architects, L.L.C. for Architectural Services for the construction of a new Community Save Room to shelter residents from severe weather and tornadic activity within the community.”

In other action the Council approved General Operation Bills of $563,224.50. The expenses were above normal due to the workers' compensation insurance premium of $95,000.

The Council also approved alcohol sales at The Friendly Shop, a street light at Blake's Curve, the sale of an airplane that has been at the airport for some time, advertising for patrolmen, the resignation of an employee, and advertising for a public hearing on zoning for JRS Realty, LLC.

Finally, the Council awarded contracts to RDS/AlaTax to process occupational taxes and business licences. RDS/AlaTax currently processes the city's sales tax.

The Council will meet again Monday, April 4, 7 PM, City Hall.
