A collision between an 18-wheeler and a Ford Focus at the Natural Bridge intersection Thursday morning sent one to the Emergency Room at Lakeland Hospital. The 18-wheeler, driven by Christy Barton, 36, Haleyville, had stopped at the four-way, then headed west on Highway 278. As she continued to accelerate in fourth gear, she saw a black Ford Focus coming through the intersection toward her truck. The driver appeared to be looking down. Barton hit her brakes. With an estimated speed of 55 miles per hour, the Focus slammed into the mid section of the empty flat bed trailer. Barton said, "a second earlier and she would have hit my tanks. A second later, the wheels on the trailer."

The driver of the Focus, Angela Jones, 38, Sipsey, had to be cut from her vehicle. She reportedly had no life threatening injuries. The accident was investigated by the Alabama State Troopers.
