Jerry Cummings, Chief Deputy Sheriff of Winston County, announced at the Winston County Republican meeting Monday night he was with-drawing from the sheriff's race. Cummings had placed second in last Tuesday's Republican primary with 26.8% of a total of 4,996 votes cast. That will leave Hobby Walker, who had 44.68% of the votes to run against Ed Townsend, a Democrat, this November. Jerry Cummings iissued the following statement:

After much consideration, I have decided not to continue in the 2014 Republican Primary Run-Off for Winston County.

In light of the election results, I have determined it best for my family, supporters, and myself to choose this course in an attempt to ensure party unity to defeat the democratic opponent in the General election in November.

I want to express my thanks to each of you who chose to support my efforts to be nominated as the Repubilican Candidate for Sheriff. I will never forget your dedicated effort, an I now ask you to join me and many others in keeping a Republican Sheriff in Office in Winston County.

Respectfully, Jerry Cummings
