FIRE CHIEF WEAVER EXPLAINS PROTECTION DUES |
On September, 10, 2009 the City of Haleyville passed Ordinance 2009-12 establishing voluntary fire protection dues for residences, businesses, and churches served by the Haleyville Fire/Rescue Department lying outside the City Limits. The anticipated revenue from the voluntary fire protection dues program will off-set the cost of providing fire protection to the community beyond the Haleyville City Limits. Currently, funding for the fire department comes from the City’s general fund which includes the ad valorem taxes paid by property owners inside the City Limits and state and federal grants.
The current fire run cost/assessment is set by the City at $1,000. Beginning January 1, 2010, if you choose not to participate in this program you will be responsible for payment. However, if you participate in this program, the fee will be waived except to the extent of insurance coverage available.
The dues may be paid in one lump sum or pro-rated in monthly installments billed by and payable to Haleyville Water Works. Residence dues have been set at $60/year or $5/month, while church and business dues will be $100/year or $8.33/month. If affected by the ordinance, you should receive a notice in the mail. Anyone who is affected and does not receive this mailing by December 31 or has questions regarding this ordinance and/or dues agreement may contact Haleyville City Hall at 486-3121. |

Jimmy Ergle, Phil Campbell, was driving south on Highway 13 when a vehicle in front of him suddenly stopped. Ergle locked his brakes and as his truck and trailer begin to jack knife he elected to leave the road in order to prevent a collision. His Dodge truck and trailer went into the ditch across from E&W Body Shop. On the trailer was a cabover tractor and a fuel tank. The vehicle which stopped in the road and caused the accident left the scene, circled back then left without stopping. |
