Haleyville City Schools Superintendent’s Report To the Public

BOE Meeting

6/23/09

  1. The school year ended on a positive note for our Art Department. Under the guidance of Mrs. Claire Frazier, Haleyville High School walked away with two top prizes in Congressman Robert Aderholt’s District 4 Art Competition. Taking 1st Place in the photography class was Brittany Robins with a black and white photo of her grandmother’s hands and Justin Terry won 2nd Place in computer art with a very colorful mosaic design creation. Great job Brittany, Justin and Mrs. Frazier.

  1. The Quad Cities Officials Association has awarded the Haleyville Lady Lions Volleyball program their annual Sportsmanship Trophy. Over twenty schools use these officials throughout Northwest Alabama and the Sportsmanship trophy is the only award given by this organization. It was presented to Coach Johnson during the annual officials and coaches meeting in Muscle Shoals last month. During the presentation, it was noted how the Haleyville players, coaches and fans have always shown such great sportsmanship whether at home or on the road. It was also noted how nice and enjoyable our hospitality room is during tournaments. This is an outstanding reflection on our community, our school and our volleyball program. Coach Johnson, the 2008 Volleyball team, our administrators, parents and all Haleyville volleyball fans deserve credit for this Sportsmanship award!

  1. Donna Jones, 4th grade Alabama history teacher, has been selected to serve on the 2009-2010 Alabama History Education Initiative taking place in Montgomery this week. This is a pilot project funded by a grant from the Malone Family Foundation and is directed by the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Mrs. Jones and other committee members are spending four days developing the Alabama History curriculum and then three individual days of follow-up later in the school year. Congratulations to Donna Jones for being chosen to serve on this prestigious statewide committee. This is another example of the outstanding quality of our faculty.

  1. Several years ago, this Board and the City entered into a joint venture to re-build the tennis courts located next to the Neighborhood Facilities Building. At that time, Senator Roger Bedford assisted us with a grant of $50,000 to help with the project. It is now time to resurface, reseal and re-stripe the courts. Again, Senator Bedford has come to our aid and provided a grant equal to the amount it will cost to complete the entire project. Estimated cost will be around $15,000. Our appreciation and sincere thanks to Senator Roger Bedford for his support of Haleyville Schools and the City of Haleyville!

  1. At the Haleyville Alumni Luncheon, our own BOE President, Ms. Sandra Manasco, was honored with the 2009 Service and Dedication Award. Ms. Manasco, in addition to serving for the last ten years as a Haleyville School Board member, also gave over twenty years as a classroom teacher at HHS and served as sponsor of the Spanish Club, the Havala yearbook, and initiated the Leo’s Loveliest beauty pageant to today’s format. We offer our congratulations on this well deserved award.

  1. This Board held a Work Session last Thursday night at the Albright Administrative Building with all members present. Discussion centered on local personnel needs, policy issues, system long and short term goals. No official business was transacted.

  1. The next Regular Session of the Haleyville City Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday night, July 21, 2009 at 7:00 in the Commons Area of the Middle School with a Work Session before.
