Superintendent’s Report
To the Public

Once again, a faculty member has been honored by an outside organization. Susan Riggs was name “Educator of the Year” at a luncheon today by the Winston County Area Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. Mrs Riggs worked with students with disabilities while she was at the high school before moving to the elementary school as assistant principal. This is a well deserved award and we congratulate Susan Riggs for a job well done!

Governor Bob Riley has proclaimed November 13 as “Jobs for Alabama’s Graduates Day.” This is the “JAG” program that is the nation’s largest model for at-risk young people who receive school-to-career services. The program is a rigorous, progressive, and vital part of the Haleyville City School system. Mr. Kyle Garrison is our JAG Specialist and we salute Alabama’s JAG program for being named one of the National 5-of-Five Performance Award winners. This award is the highest performance-based award issued to a JAG program.

Kudos also goes to Mrs. Betty Wakefield, our system’s Payroll Clerk. She has completed The Alabama Association of School Business Officials and the Alabama State Department of Education Payroll-Personnel Certificate Program. This is a two year program with a curriculum that covers responsibilities such as Employee Leave Laws, Wage and Hour Laws, Deferred Compensation Plans, Alabama Schools accounting System and Payroll Coding to Payroll Withholding and Tax Deposit Requirements. It is a very intense curriculum that provides professional development experiences and recognition for the wide variety of assignments, duties and tasks of School Business Officials. Congratulations Mrs. Betty Wakefield!

Lastly, the State Department of Education Division of Transportation conducted its annual inspection of our fleet of school buses. Once again, Mr. Mike Batchelor, our bus maintenance person, is to be applauded for receiving a perfect score. No buses were found to have major deficiencies. We are pleased with this report and proud that our students travel in safe, well-maintained buses.

This Board held a Work Session earlier at the Albright Administrative Building. We discussed the construction projects, personnel needs, and other short and long term objectives of our school system. We also did a walk-thru of the new Middle School. No official business was transacted.

The next Regular Session of the Haleyville City Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, November 25 here in the Choral Music Room of the high school with a Work Session before.
