The City Council raised the sales tax rate by one percent Monday, effective February 1, 2011.

According to Mayor Ken Sunseri, the city is not drawing in sufficient income to maintain the city, its equipment and its services. The new rate, added to state and county taxes, will be 9%, the same as most communities surrounding Haleyville. Additionally, 10% of the total sales tax collected will be diverted to the school system, also suffering from dwindling funds.

In other action, the Council approved alcohol sales for Captain Dave's Restaurant; approved Cassady Company as engineer for the the HWY13 Drainage project; and accepted a bid for surplus equipment from the armory.

The next meeting of the Council will be Monday, December 20, 7 PM.
