Scam Alert

HBTV and Haleyville Police have been alerted to an attempted scam. The scam is an older one, but has reared its ugly head once again.

The basics of the scam are this: you have posted something for sale on an internet site; you are contacted by a “buyer” who offers to send you a check or money order for more than you are asking on the condition that you send what you are selling and the difference, in cash; the check or money order turns out to be counterfeit and/or worthless.

The lesson: only accept payment for the amount of the sale; allow sufficient time for any draft to clear the issuing bank/institution before shipping the item you are selling.
