Mary Stokes, of 2105 County Road 85 in Marion County, was injured early Friday morning when two causcasian men wearing masks and gloves broke into her home and demanded her money and jewelry, according to Marion County Sheriff Kevin Williams. Stokes, who was alone at the time, fought with her attackers and escaped to a neighbor’s home. The attackers apparently then tried to burn her home to the ground before fleeing.

Haleyville and Bear Creek fire and police departments responded to the call and were assisted later by Pebble and Delmar fire departments. Firefighters fought multiple hot spots throughout the morning. The fire was declared extinguished shortly before noon.

Stokes was taken to Lakeland Community Hospital; her condition is unknown.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshall are investigating. Anyone who may have seen anyone or anything suspicious Friday morning in the area of CR85 is asked to call the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at (205) 921-7433.
