Jared Dewayne Deason was arrested Thursday, January 28, 2010, by the Haleyville Police on charges of Negotiating Worthless Instruments. Several businesses in Haleyville discovered that Deason had written worthless checks to them.

Deason, age unknown of Jasper, was interrogated then transported to the Winston County Jail. He gave Camp Maxwell as his address. According to sources familiar with the case, he opened a checking account at Listerhill Credit Union with $25 and then began writing checks throughout Haleyville.

Checks written included $1,700 to a local auto parts store, $600 to a thrift store, and $150 to a local tobacco store. In toto, checks totaling more than $10,000 have been written. In one instance, five chain saws were purchased and then turned up a pawn shop. Haleyville Police have recovered almost everything purchased.

Deason was turned over Friday to the Jefferson County Sheriff, who held warrants for him. Two other cities were also holding warrants.

Anyone who may have taken any checks written by Jared or Jerry Dewayne Deason, should contact the Haleyville Police Department at 486-5201. Posted in News | Crime and Courts
