MISS THE SIGN?
Stolen street signs cost thousands to replace Road signs are having a tendency to disappear, said Haleyville Police Chief Kyle Reogas, and not only does it cost the city taxpayers to replace, it can cause some dangerous situations.
Reogas said that if you pull down a stop sign and a new driver doesn't know to stop, it could cause an accident. "It might even cause a fatality
"Signs are there to warn and inform the public about driving conditions," Reogas said. Missing signs also cause problems when people are looking for directions. When an emergency vehicle goes out, sometimes it's hard for them to find streets because the signs are missing.
"When you have them down all over the city, it gets expensive," he said. Taking a road sign is against the law. It is considered theft and is a Class C misdemeanor. Chief Reogas states, “those caught stealing or vandalizing signs will be prosecuted to the fullest extent allowed by law”.
