Haleyville Mayor Ken Sunseri
Senator Jeff Sessions, (R-AL) visited Lakeland Community Hospital to discuss national health care with local medical providers and public officials. Senator Sessions stated the United States has the best health care system in the world. He pointed out that through private health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid, no one is being refused care. The senator stated that seventeen percent of the U.S. Gross National Product (GNP) is spent on health care, yet forty million people have no health coverage which breaks down to ten million illegal aliens, another ten million make $75,000 or more and just don't have insurance and a large group eligible for Medicare and/or Medicaid just signed up. Another group of uninsured are young people who don't think they will ever be sick and don't want to bother to pay for coverage. Sessions said he felt changing the whole American health care system was not necessary. He affirmed his belief in a free market as opposed to socialized medicine.
He discussed proposed legislation (the Obama plan) stating the House was waiting to see what the Senate was going to do before a final vote on the House bill. Senator Sessions continued his health care visit across Alabama to discover what his constituents think about the existing and proposed health care system in the United States.
