Haleyville High School head football coach, Steve Spiller, was terminated as head coach at a special called meeting of the Haleyville Board of Education early Thursday morning. Rumors had circulated about Spiller resigning, instead his job as coach at HHS came to an end with a unanimous vote of all the board members. Board president Larry Burleson stated the contract was cancelled because the football program needed a change of direction. Burleson praised Spiller for all the work he has done in the past and stated "he is a good man and an excellent teacher." "We hope he will stay on forever." Burleson stated rumors a replacement had already been chosen were false. Burleson said the board plans to hire the best person available to be the next head football coach. At this point, "no one has been selected or offered the job." An extensive search will begin immediately.
In other business, the BOE also approved the non-renewal of Linda Morton in a support personnel position for the 2009-2010 school year.
