HACKLEBURG TEENAGER DROWNS IN CREEK
Officials have determined Kevin Matthew Cagle, 16, Hackleburg was the victim of an accidental drowning when he and two friends went on an outing Thursday afternoon on Bear Creek at the bridge and float way on Marion Highway 172 near Antioch Church. Matthew was walking in the water when he reportedly stepped off a rock ledge and disappeared under the water.
The Bear Creek and Hackleburg Rescue Squads were called to search for the missing boy. The Haleyville Rescue Squad responded with its mobile command center and recovery dive team. All three teams searched the area until dark when the search was suspended until Friday morning. Divers from Winfield joined in when the search efforts resumed at 9 a.m. Friday.
After a twenty minute search, Haleyville Rescue Squad divers discovered and recovered the missing boy approximately thirty yards from where he was last seen. Aiding in the search and recovery were members of the Marine Police, RPS ambulance service, and Marion County Sheriff's Department.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 4, 2 p.m. at the Hackleburg Church of Christ with visitation Sunday night 6 - 9 p.m.
