LAKELAND COMMUNITY HOSPITAL PREPARES FOR
POTENTIAL SWINE FLU OUTBREAK

Some steps you can take to prevent the spread of the flu are:

  • Wash your hands often for a minimum of 15 seconds with soap and warm water.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your sleeve, not your bare hand.

  • Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Stay at least six feet away from anyone who is sick.

  • Clean and disinfect any contaminated surfaces.

  • If you are sick, stay home.

  • Update stockpiles of food, water, and medications.

As government officials have noted, the current swine flu outbreak is a public health concern, but, at this time, is not considered an emergency. Lakeland Community Hospital has an emergency preparedness plan in place that would become activated in the event of an influenza pandemic. “Our emergency preparedness plan identifies the steps to take if there is a pandemic, or if we experience a large influx of patients,” says Jeansonne. “We practice drills throughout the year to make sure we are prepared to handle a variety of emergencies, including pandemic outbreaks. We do want to stress at this time that this situation is a time for appropriate action, but not a time for panic.”
