TRACTOR TRAILER TRUCK JACK KNIFES AT RABBIT TOWN
Jason Nelson driving his empty tractor-trailer truck north on Highway 195 jack knifed into a ditch to avoid hitting a van that had stopped in front of him. The driver of the van stopped in her north bound lane when she saw a deputy sheriff's car with lights approaching from the opposite direction. The deputy was escorting a funeral procession headed to Double Springs from Haleyville
and had just gone through Rabbit Town. Jason was on a return leg after hauling coal from a strip pit coal mine on Hwy 243 to the Alabama Power Steam plant at Gorgas. His empty truck would not stop on the wet payment and he maneuvered off the road to avoid hitting the stopped vehicle in the highway. The driver of the van continued on her way unaware of the accident. Law enforcement officials have stated that stopping or pulling off the road for an oncoming funeral procession can be very dangerous. Roads in this area have very limited line of sight caused by hills and curves.
