|
|
Shirley Upton recalled slipping on wet leaves beside her home on Highway 129 and sliding down to the edge of a bluff on Monday afternoon, February 2. As she clung to a small bush, Shirley asked her 8 year old granddaughter, Shanna McDonald to slide her cell phone down to her. She called 9-1-1 and described her predicument. Marion 9-1-1 dispatched Haleyville Fire and Rescue. Meanwhile, Shirley made another call to her niece, Cathy Snipes, who was at work at Burnett Truck Line. Cathy arrived first and threw a garden hose down to Shirley for her to hold on to. |
Shirley expressed her gratitude to Haleyville Police SGT Dennis Bales and firemen Rodney Shirley, Drew Thrasher and Paul Holly, who brought her to safety. She praised Dr. Elliott and the staff at the Lakeland Emergency Room who treated her for hypothermia. Shirley said she had a few bruises and is happy that is all. |
