Haleyville City Council Hires Two New Police Officers
March 18, 2008
|
In the regular bi-monthly meeting Tuesday night, Jason Davis and Shane Whitten were hired as new police officers. Both will become certified officers following the completion the Alabama Police Academy which starts May 4. Both should be available for work as Haleyville police officers in about 12 weeks. Their starting pay will be $9,76/hr, rising to over $14/hr in 4 years. Chief Reogas received 21 applications and the list narrowed to Davis and Whitten. He stated there were no certified applicants, thus the city will fund training to get them fully qualified.
Also approved were the minutes of the regular meeting on 3/4/08 and the February general operation bills. In addition, a bid from Mallory Burkhalter Company of Northport for $268,000 was approved for paving the streets and parking lots downtown. A bid for $13,075.32 from Strips, Inc to strip the streets once paved were approved.
The council approved spending $5,708 for floor tile and installation at the Neighborhood Facility Building (NFB). The floor is located on the pool side of the NFB.
Approval was made to advertise for lifeguards and seasonal park maintenance employees.
Resolution 2008-08 was passed which is an agreement with the state for traffic signal maintenance.
Fire Chief Phillip Weaver asked for and received approval to advertise for new jaws of life. He stated some of the metallurgy used on late model cars and trucks is very difficult to cut with the older and smaller units the firemen presently use.
Mike Taylor asked for and received approval for approximately $7,000 to repair an old street department tractor. A new unit cost $30,776 state bid price, thus the decision was made to repair the old one for now and replace it at a later time.
Taylor stated the Federal Aviation Administration ruled the needed stripping for the Haleyville airport runway would have to be done with water based paint, which cost less but does not last as long as the paint normally used to strip streets.
During the comment period, the use of the weather warning sirens was discussed and the information will be posted as a separate story to make sure everyone understands the signals and when the shelter in the basement of the library downtown is opened. Look for the story by Thursday.
The next regular meeting of the Haleyville City Council will be Tuesday, April 1, 6 p.m. at city hall. |
