Superintendent’s Report
To the Public

1. This month’s first highlight goes to our CNP Staff of the lunchrooms and the great job they do feeding our students, faculty and staff. The ladies get here early and work extremely hard to have well balanced meals. Especially, I want to focus on our breakfast program. March 3 – 7 will be National School Breakfast Week. Can you imagine eating a breakfast for only $.75 that can include a gravy biscuit, fruit, and milk or juice? To encourage more students to enjoy a breakfast on campus, a free school-wide breakfast will be served to high school and elementary students on Tuesday morning, March 4 from 7:15 until 8:00. Parents, instead of spending several dollars for breakfast at home or at a fast food drive through, encourage them to try our breakfast FREE on Tuesday, March 4.

2. Our award winning concert band continues its winning ways under the new direction of Director Mike Muncher. During District Competition last week, the band graded “1’s” in all categories. This is as good as it gets! Congratulations on continuing the “Tradition of Excellence” to Mr. Muncher and all of our outstanding band members.

3. Our basketball student-athletes have once again proven that Haleyville High is the “Home of Champions.” The boys are Area and Sub-Regional winners and will be playing at Wallace State in Hanceville in State Regional action this Thursday night. Coach Taylor has the Lions playing strong and will tip-off against East Lawrence at 7:30. Come out and support these fine young men. The girls had a good season being Area Runner-Up and fell short in Sub-Regional play. Congratulations to both varsity teams and coaches.

4. As many are aware, our Automotive Technology department is building a car from the ground up. It is an old T-Bucket design. We are getting great support in this venture and recently, Mr. Batchelor and the students were invited to display the project car at the World of Wheels in Birmingham. At a legislative gathering the first of the month, Senator Roger Bedford was telling other superintendents how impressed he was when he and Representative Mike Millican visited our campus. He explained that before a student could work on the project, certain standards had to be met including, grades, behavior, and attendance. Congratulations to Mike Batchelor and the students of the T-Bucket Project.

5. February is Alabama Career and Technical Education Month. We are very proud of our Career Tech Center and the T-Bucket is just one of our points of pride. We are just as proud of our Welding, Drafting, Agri-business, Business/Marketing, Family & Consumer Sciences, and Computer Technology classes. We salute this area of our school system for preparing students for the workplace of the 21st Century.

6. It is with pride that I announce three grants that have been awarded our system. With the help of Senator Bedford and Representative Millican, we received two grant awards of the Alabama Public School and College Education Incentive Fund. One, for $112,599, is to help further the success of our Automotive Technology department. The other is for $37,441 for an Elementary School digital Learning Podcast Initiative. These funds come from the state wide bond issue passed by the legislature last spring. A third grant award is through Northwest Alabama RC&D Council to assist with matching funds to place Smart Boards, LCD Projectors, and Mobile Presentation Pads in our classrooms. The total amount of this award when matched is $8, 640. County Commissioner Roger Hayes was instrumental in assisting with this grant.

7. This Board held a Work Session this afternoon at the Albright Administrative Building with all members present. We discussed the construction of our new middle school, personnel needs, along with other short and long range objectives of our school system. We also heard parent concerns of our schools. No official business was transacted.

8. The next regular session of the Haleyville City Board of Education is scheduled for March 25 at 7:00 pm here in the Choral Music Room of HHS with a Work Session to proceed.
