(known as the North/South Four-lane highway along the western side of Alabama) was held at Bevill State Community College (Hamilton) led by Alabama Senator Roger Bedford.
Senator Bedford explained the proposed four-lane highway was a huge project with a projected cost today of $5.3 billion. Years of environmental and engineering studies will have to be completed before construction can begin in the very distant future. He emphasized this project would in no way stop or hinder other state road building projects such as the relocation of State Highway 13 (Haleyville by-
pass).
This proposed project, if it becomes a reality, would be funded with a combination of public and private funds.
Mack Roberts, former DOT director for Alabama, and now an associate
with a New York investment company that owns toll bridges, roads and
tunnels throughout the U.S., stated it is possible to raise the money
for such a highway. The end result would be a highway with some "free"
travel and some stretches that would require a toll.
Also addressing the audience were Lieutenant Governor Jim Folsom and
representatives from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).
This project was originally suggested in the fifties by governor "Bill Jim" Folsom, father to Jim Folsom.
