- Recently there has been much concern nationally and locally regarding “staph” infections, especially the Methicillin-resistant staph (MRSA). We would like to assure all that surveillance and infection control procedures have been and will continue to be implemented by Haleyville City Schools to monitor and control these bacterial infections. A proactive approach is the best method and with everyone’s cooperation, we hope not to experience a major outbreak. Should it be noticed that a child has a painful skin lesion, or other lesions that resemble a “spider bite” or pustule skin lesions that appears to be infected, contact your primary health care provider. In addition to our regular daily in-house cleanings, we have contracted with a professional service provider to sanitize all community restrooms at the elementary school, the 7th-8th grade building, high school, main playing gym, and field house, as well as all locker rooms and showers on a monthly basis. Every urinal, commode, sink and even the floor is treated with a chemical process which removes bacteria and soil buildup, followed by a fresh water rinse. The water is then vacuumed away allowing floors to dry quickly. Finally, all fixtures are blown dry ensuring the areas are ready for immediate use. We also have purchased machines that constantly disinfect locker/weight room facilities. Again, this is a proactive approach to prevent Haleyville students and faculty from having an outbreak.
- I mentioned last month a couple of student groups who were “giving back” to the community with special service projects. This month I would like to highlight the PYLI (Points of Life Youth Leadership) group. This group of 20 boys and girls in grades 10 through 12 completed a special curriculum during a three day span in which various leadership skills were learned and community needs were identified. They then worked with the Haleyville Parks & Recreation Department clearing the hiking trail from the City Lake to Rocky Ravine Park and painting the pavilion and restroom buildings at the park. A big “way-to-go” to the PYLI group for going outside our campus and supporting our community who supports our school!
- This Board held a Work Session last night at the Albright Administrative Building with all members present. We discussed the proposed support personnel salary matrix, the construction of our new middle school, personnel needs, along with other short and long range needs, objectives, and concerns of our school system. No official business was transacted.
- The next regular session of the Haleyville City Board of Education is scheduled for December 18 at 7:00 pm here in the Choral Music Room of HHS with a Work Session to proceed.
