Superintendent’s Report
To the Public
BOE Meeting

8/22/06

We’re off to a good start of the ’06-’07 School Year.  Enrollment is up slightly from last year, but it varies from day to day.  This is normal and will be until after Labor Day.  The teachers, administrators, and support folks have worked extremely hard to welcome the students back and the classrooms, buildings and grounds look great.  Congratulations to all for a job well done.

I mentioned last month that our new Athletic Facility was just about ready for use and we are even closer today.  The State Inspector has completed his “Above the Ceiling” review and the first “Final” inspection will hopefully be conducted next week.  Our plans are to still to be in the building by the first home game.

I am continuing to work with the adjuster and Risk Management Insurance on a settlement of last April’s storm damage.  We should be able to start working on the ball field repairs soon.

I would be remiss if I didn’t comment again on the inaccuracy of the Birmingham News in the August 10th reporting of schools meeting AYP goals.  Haleyville Elementary and High School had 34 total goals to meet and met 33 of the 34 for a 97% success rate.  The Elementary School met all 17 of their goals for 100% and the High School met 16 of their 17 goals or 94.12%.  While we will not be satisfied until we are 100% at both schools, 97% is a far cry from the reported 50% by the News.  Again, as a system, Haleyville City Schools “Made AYP”, which stands for Adequate Yearly Progress.  We are very proud of our faculty, staff, and students for their hard work and it is unfortunate for an inaccurate report to be printed by the state’s largest newspaper.

I would like to congratulate Mike Batchelor, our Automotive Technology teacher and bus mechanic, on the bus fleet receiving a perfect State Bus Inspection score.  Mr. Batchelor has also earned his official School Bus Mechanic Certification, awarded by the State Board of Education.

This Board held a Working Session prior to tonight’s meeting.  We discussed our ongoing projects, along with the system’s short and long-term goals and objectives.  No action was taken.

The next session of the Haleyville City Board of Education is planned for September 26 at 7:00 pm in the Choral Music Room of Haleyville High School.  A Working Session will proceed.
