|| February 1, 2006, Lenton Stockton Enters a Guilty Plea
On Tuesday, February 1, 2006, Lenton Stockton (age 46) of Haleyville, entered a guilty plea in the Circuit Court of Winston County to the offense of Sodomy in the First Degree. His plea came after the State of Alabama rested its case during the second day of a jury trial before Circuit Judge John Bentley.
Upon entering his plea, Stockton was sentenced to 20 years in prison. This sentence was split for Stockton to serve five (5) years in custody, followed by 15 years on supervised probation. As conditions of his 15-year probation period, Stockton was ordered to attend a weekly sex offender program, to have no contact with his victim, and to have no unsupervised contact with any child less than 16 years of age. Stockton was ordered to begin serving the five (5)–year custodial portion of his sentence on March 1, 2006. Until such time, he is subject to electronic monitoring.
The testimony during the trial showed that in October of 2004, a then seven-year-old female child reported to school officials that Stockton had touched her in a sexual manner. In entering his guilty plea, Stockton admitted to placing his mouth on the child’s genital area.
Deputy District Attorney Neal Cook, who prosecuted Stockton, expressed his gratitude to all of those who participated in the reporting and investigation of the abuse. Cook stated: “We often overuse the word ‘hero.’ However, those who work to protect our most innocent citizens are truly heroes. But the greatest of the heroes are the children who show the strength and courage to come forward and stand up against those who have violated their innocence.”
